Medicare Policy Types

Medicare Part A and B (Original Medicare)

If you are already receiving Social Security Retirement or disability- you will be enrolled automatically in Part A and B on the first day of the month you turn 65. 


You can apply online if you are not yet receiving Social Security Benefits through Social Security Administration website.

Medicare Supplement

What is Medicare Supplement or Medigap? This is an extra insurance you can buy to pay for your share of out of pocket costs that original Medicare does not cover. This type of insurance is in addition to Original Medicare. 

Medicare Advantage

Medicare Advantage policies provide coverage for all Original Medicare benefits PLUS, Part D (prescription drug plan), dental, vision and hearing.

Initial Enrollment Period (IEP)

For individuals who are enrolling for the first time: last 7 months, starts 3 months before 65th Birthday. During this time you can apply for Original Medicare Parts A & B, Medicare Advantage (part C) or Part D (prescriptions drug plan).

General Enrollment Period (GEP)

Runs from January 1- March 31 each year. If you missed your Initial Enrollment Period- you can apply during the General Enrollment Period. A late enrollment penalty may be applied. 

Annual Enrollment Period (AEP)

Medicare Advantage Open Enrollment

Runs from October 15- December 7 each year. 

You can make changes in your current Medicare coverage- switching, joining, dropping different Medicare plans.

January 1- March 31 each year.

Specifically for people already enrolled in an Advantage Plan who are looking to switch to a different Advantage plan or switch back to Original Medicare.
